Planning a bathroom renovation? Here are seven things that could affect your plumbing costs before the first tile is even removed.

Renovating a bathroom is exciting! From choosing beautiful tapware and tiles to designing the perfect shower, there's plenty to get excited about.

But while most homeowners focus on how their new bathroom will look, there's something equally important happening behind the walls and beneath the floor.

The plumbing.

And it's often the things you can't see that have the biggest impact on your renovation budget.

At CNL Plumbing & Drainage, we work alongside local builders on bathroom, kitchen and laundry renovations throughout Hervey Bay and the Fraser Coast.

One thing we always encourage homeowners to understand is that two bathrooms of exactly the same size can have vastly different plumbing requirements. So, before you finalise your renovation budget, here are seven important factors to consider.

1. Is Your Existing Plumbing Compliant?

Just because your bathroom has been functioning for the past 20 years doesn't necessarily mean everything behind the walls meets current plumbing requirements.

During renovations, existing plumbing installations can reveal issues such as:

  • Incorrectly installed or poorly configured drainage.

  • Pipework that has deteriorated over time.

  • Previous plumbing alterations that weren't completed correctly.

  • Existing plumbing that isn't suitable for your proposed new fixtures.

  • Plumbing installations that require modification to meet applicable standards.

This doesn't mean every older bathroom needs a complete plumbing replacement!

However, when altering existing plumbing, your licensed plumber needs to assess what can be retained and what may require upgrading.

Why does this affect the cost?

If non-compliant or damaged plumbing is discovered during demolition, additional work may be necessary before your beautiful new bathroom can be installed.

These issues aren't always visible during the initial quotation, which is why it's important to understand how unexpected work will be handled.

2. Are You Moving Your Toilet, Shower, Bath or Vanity?

This is one of the biggest factors influencing bathroom renovation plumbing costs.

Let's compare two renovations.

Bathroom A:

The homeowner is replacing their shower, toilet and vanity but keeping everything in their original positions.

Depending on the condition and suitability of the existing plumbing, the work may be relatively straightforward.

Bathroom B:

The homeowner wants to move the toilet to the opposite wall, relocate the shower, install a freestanding bath and move the vanity.

While the finished bathrooms might look equally beautiful, Bathroom B could require significantly more plumbing work.

Relocating fixtures may involve:

  • Installing new hot and cold water pipework.

  • Altering existing sanitary drainage.

  • Creating new drainage connections.

  • Modifying wall cavities or floor penetrations.

  • Additional labour, materials and coordination with other trades.

Our advice?

Before falling in love with a completely new bathroom layout, have a conversation with your builder and plumber about what those changes will involve.

Sometimes a small design adjustment can make a significant difference to the plumbing scope.

3. Will Your Renovation Require Concrete Cutting?

If your Hervey Bay home is built on a concrete slab, relocating certain bathroom fixtures may involve considerably more work than you expect.

For example, moving a toilet or shower waste could require accessing the drainage pipework beneath the existing slab.

Depending on the layout and construction of your home, this may involve:

  • Cutting and removing sections of concrete.

  • Excavating to expose existing drainage.

  • Altering or installing new drainage pipework.

  • Testing the completed installation.

  • Backfilling and reinstating affected areas.

These works involve additional labour, equipment and materials.

They can also affect the renovation timeline and require coordination between your plumber, builder and other trades.

It's worth asking whether concrete cutting, excavation and reinstatement are included in your renovation quote.

Don't assume they are!

4. Choosing Your Tapware and Fixtures Before Getting a Plumbing Quote

Choosing your bathroom fixtures is one of the most exciting parts of renovating. From beautiful brushed brass tapware to statement basins and freestanding baths, the options are almost endless!

But here's something many homeowners don't realise:

Your fixture selections can directly influence how your plumbing needs to be installed.

At CNL Plumbing & Drainage, we encourage our clients to discuss their proposed bathroom layout and tapware selections with us before we prepare their plumbing quote.

Why?

Because knowing exactly what you intend to install allows us to assess the plumbing requirements, identify any potential complications and provide a quotation based on your proposed design.

Can You Supply Your Own Tapware and Fixtures?

Absolutely! In fact, we prefer it.

We love seeing our clients choose fixtures that reflect their personal style, and we're more than happy for you to purchase your own tapware, toilets, basins, baths and other bathroom fittings.

However, we strongly recommend purchasing from reputable Australian retailers and suppliers.

Not all plumbing products are created equal, and it's important to ensure your selections are suitable for installation in Australia and meet applicable plumbing requirements.

What Are WaterMark and WELS?

When purchasing bathroom fixtures, particularly online, you may come across two important terms: WaterMark and WELS.

WaterMark certification confirms that certain plumbing and drainage products meet the applicable Australian certification requirements. Products that require WaterMark certification must be appropriately certified before they can be legally installed.

WELS (Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards) is Australia's water efficiency labelling scheme.

It helps consumers compare the water efficiency of products such as taps, showers and toilets. Products covered by the scheme must meet applicable registration and labelling requirements.

Not every bathroom product is subject to the same requirements, but it's important to check that the products you're purchasing are suitable for installation in Australia.

A beautiful tap might look incredible online, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's approved or suitable for your bathroom!

Our recommendation?

Choose products from reputable suppliers and discuss your selections with your plumber before purchasing.

Changed Your Mind About Your Tapware? Tell Your Plumber!

This one is particularly important.

We understand that renovation plans can change.

You might discover a different basin you love, decide on a wall-mounted mixer instead of a standard tap, or swap your original toilet selection for another model.

But even small changes to your fixtures can affect the plumbing requirements.

Different products may require different pipe locations, connection arrangements, mounting heights or installation clearances.

If the plumbing rough-in has already been completed, changing your selections could mean additional alterations, labour and costs.

That's why we ask our clients to communicate any changes to their tapware or fixture selections before proceeding with a different product.

Our advice?

Choose your fixtures early, discuss them with your plumber before finalising your quote, and keep everyone informed if your plans change.

A little communication during the planning stage can save a whole lot of headaches later!

5. Have You Allowed for Plumbing Compliance and Form 4 Requirements?

Here's something many Queensland homeowners don't realise.

Certain plumbing work completed during bathroom renovations must be registered with the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC).

In Queensland, alterations to existing plumbing and drainage systems during bathroom renovations are commonly classified as notifiable work.

When work falls into this category, the licensed plumbing contractor is required to register a Form 4 with the QBCC.

A Form 4 records the plumbing work completed and identifies the licensed people responsible for carrying it out.

Not all plumbing work falls into the same category. Some work is classified as minor work, while certain projects may require Council plumbing approval.

What does this mean for your renovation budget?

Depending on the scope of work, your quote may need to allow for:

  • Applicable plumbing compliance requirements.

  • Form 4 registration fees.

  • Administration associated with compliance documentation.

  • Any additional approvals required for the proposed works.

Before accepting your quote, ask whether the relevant plumbing compliance costs are included.

A properly completed renovation isn't just about how good the finished bathroom looks. The plumbing behind it matters just as much.

6. Does Your Renovation Require QBCC Home Warranty Insurance?

Another cost worth understanding is Queensland's Home Warranty Scheme.

For certain residential construction and renovation works valued at more than $3,300, including labour, materials and GST, home warranty insurance is compulsory.

This can include eligible plumbing work such as replacing or refitting bathroom fixtures.

The insurance is administered by the QBCC and provides eligible homeowners with protection in certain circumstances, including incomplete or defective work.

However, whether a separate premium applies to your plumbing quote depends on the contractual arrangements and the type of work being completed.

For example, when a licensed builder is managing the overall renovation, the builder will generally be responsible for the applicable home warranty insurance for the project.

If a homeowner engages a plumbing contractor directly for eligible work, the plumbing contractor may be responsible for arranging the insurance.

What should you ask?

Before proceeding, confirm whether QBCC Home Warranty Insurance is required and whether the applicable premium has been included in your quotation.

It's an important detail to understand when comparing renovation prices.

7. What's Actually Included in Your Plumbing Quote?

Here's where things can get confusing.

You receive two quotes for your bathroom renovation, and one is considerably cheaper than the other.

Naturally, you might wonder why.

But before comparing the bottom-line figures, it's important to understand exactly what each quote includes.

One plumber might have allowed for all the required drainage alterations, concrete cutting, compliance documentation and installation materials.

Another might have quoted only for the visible fixture installation, with additional works charged separately.

Neither quotation should be assessed on price alone without understanding the scope.

Before accepting a plumbing quote, consider asking:

  • Does the quote include all required plumbing alterations?

  • Are the fixtures supplied by the plumber, builder or homeowner?

  • Have the selected fixtures been confirmed as suitable for installation?

  • Is concrete cutting or excavation included if required?

  • Are plumbing compliance fees included?

  • Is QBCC Home Warranty Insurance required and accounted for?

  • What happens if damaged or non-compliant plumbing is discovered?

  • How will additional work or variations be quoted and approved?

  • Are any works specifically excluded?

A clear, detailed quotation helps everyone understand what's included and reduces the likelihood of unexpected costs during construction.

So, Why Can Two Bathrooms Cost So Much Differently to Renovate?

Imagine two Hervey Bay homeowners renovating bathrooms of similar size.

One is replacing existing fixtures in their original locations, with plumbing that's in good condition and suitable for the new design.

The other is completely changing the layout, relocating drainage beneath a concrete slab and installing fixtures that require additional plumbing alterations.

The finished bathrooms might look equally impressive.

But the amount of plumbing work required to achieve those results could be completely different.

That's why the cost of bathroom plumbing isn't determined by the size of the room alone.

It's determined by the existing conditions, proposed design, materials, installation requirements and the work needed to complete everything correctly.
